Smith’s School of English joint events are lots of fun for both students and teachers. Students can meet students from their own schools as well as students and teachers from other Smith’s schools. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends and practice English. Al, John and I are all Smith’s teachers and own our own Smith’s schools. On Sunday, December 13, 2009 our schools (Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi, Smith’s School of English Kawanishi and Smith’s School of English Okamoto) held a joint Christmas event together at an Irish pub in Nishinomiya City called Authentic Irish Pub CAPALL UISCE （正統派 アイリッシュPUB カプリシカ CAPALL UISCE）. A total of 26 people attended this event which lasted 3 hours. Lunch consisted of Caesar salad with homemade crispy bacon, homemade salmon marinade Carpaccio style, fish and chips, chicken, shepherd’s pie, pizza and spaghetti. It was very good.

スミス英会話のいくつかの学校が共同で開催するイベントは、生徒さんにとっても私たち講師にとっても本当に楽しいものです。　ジョイント・イベントでは、生徒さんは自分と同じ学校の生徒さんたちだけでなく、他校の先生や生徒さんたちとの出会いも楽しめます。　新しい友達ができたり、英会話の練習ができたり、と良いことでいっぱいです。
今回のイベントを共催した３校のアルとジョンと私は、それぞれの学校のオーナーであり講師でもあります。　２００９年１２月１３日（日）にこの３校（スミス英会話の岡本校、川西校そして私の塚口校）は阪急・西宮北口駅近くの “正統派アイリッシュＰＵＢカプリシカＣＡＰＡＬＬ ＵＩＳＣＥ” という、まるでイギリスに行ったようなちょっとオシャレなパブでジョイント・クリスマス・パーティをしました。　参加者は２６名で、予定していた３時間をたっぷり楽しみました。　ランチ・メニューは、カリカリの手作りベーコンが入ったシーザー・サラダ、ホームメイドのスモーク・サーモン・カルパッチョ風、イギリス料理では欠かせないフィシュッ・アンド・チップス、チキン、これまたイギリスの代表的なミートパイのシェパーズ・パイ、ピザそしてスパゲッティ。　どれもとても美味しかったです。

 

During the event, I saw some of my students from Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi exchanging email addresses. They were sitting together and had made friends. One of them thanked me for giving her the chance to make new friends. I was happy to hear that. Great!

イベントの途中で、私は塚口校の何人かの生徒さんがメール・アドレスの交換をしているのを見ました。　みなさんはイベントを楽しんで、そして友達作りも同時に楽しんでいるようでした。　アドレス交換をしていた生徒さんから 「新しい友達ができました。　良い機会を作ってもらって嬉しいです。」 と喜んでもらえました。　生徒さんの嬉しい声を聞いて、私は最高の気分になりました。　よかった！

 

Another student who later emailed me mentioned that she was happy she had had the chance to speak to 3 teachers and hear Canadian English (from me), American English (from Al) and British English (from John). This is another plus of having joint events for our students. Hearing different kinds of English is good for them and I am happy to give them the opportunity to do that at our joint Smith’s School of English events.

また違う生徒さんは、このイベントが終わってから私にお礼のメールをくれました。　そのメールの中で “３つの違う英語” に触れることができたと喜んでいました。　その日このイベントを共催した３人の講師たちは、カナダ英語を話す私、アメリカ英語を話すアル、そしてイギリス英語を話すジョンという面白い組み合わせだったのです。　このようにジョイント・イベントでは、違った英語に触れるというプラスの効果も生徒さんに味わってもらうことができるのです。　異なった英語を聞くことは生徒さんにとっては大変良い勉強になります。　私はスミス英会話のジョイント・イベントをすることで生徒のみなさんにこのような経験をしてもらえるのをとても嬉しく思っています。

 

We could drink as much as we liked from a drink menu that was for our set lunch. I had Ooolong tea with my food. However I wanted to try GUINNESS dark beer, which was displayed in some pictures in the pub. Loving sweet things, I don’t usually drink beer because it’s too bitter for me. However that dark beer looked nice and I wanted to try it. If I was going to drink beer, why not have one that was famous therefore probably very good? GUINNESS wasn’t on our all you can drink menu, so I went ahead and bought myself a glass. There were 3 sizes. The small-sized glass was 550 yen, the medium-sized one 750 yen and the larger one 900 yen. Hmm… I finally went for the largest one, which was 1 pint! I grabbed my larger glass filled with beautiful dark beer with nice foam on top. I tried it and it was nice. As soon as I drank it, I felt like having something sweet to eat. I guess it’s because of the bitterness. I regretted not having had any dessert (we had COSTCO cake from COSTCO at the September barbecue event, which was delicious). From now on, I’ll be sure always to have dessert at events, even if I don’t drink beer. (^.^) A student of mine told me that black beer suited me. (^.^) Someone asked me to compare the beer to another beer that people were drinking (Yebisu beer). I couldn’t because I had never drunk the other beer before! I hadn’t drunk beer in years! It was fun! 1 pint was a bit too much for me but I drank it all before leaving not to waste it. As you can see, I have a lot of fun at events!
That was the only drink I had apart from Oolong tea. Really! (^.^)

この日、私たちは “飲み放題” の予約をしていましたが、私は食事のときにウーロン茶ばかりを飲んでいました。　けれどもパブの中にディスプレイされていた写真の、なんともかっこ良いギネスの黒ビールが飲みたくなりました。　甘いもの好きの私には、ビールは苦すぎて普段は飲みません。　でもあの写真の黒ビールは美味しそうで、ちょっと試してみたくなりました。　もし私がビールを飲むのだったら、きっと美味しいから有名になったに違いないあの黒ビールを試さない訳にはいかないでしょ？！(笑)　私が飲みたくなったこのギネス・ビールは飲み放題のメニューの中には入っていなかったので、私はカウンターのところへ行ってそのビールを注文しました。
ギネス・ビールのサイズは３種類ありました。　スモール・サイズのグラスは５５０円、ミドル・サイズは７５０円、ビッグ・サイズは９００円・・・う〜ん、どれにしようかなぁ・・・結局一番かっこいいビッグ・サイズにしました。(笑)　それはなんと１パイント（ヤード・ポンド法の数え方でイギリスでは０．５７リットル）も！　私はグラスの口にビールの泡が美味しそうにのっている大きなグラスを受け取りました。　私はちょっと飲んでみました・・・なんて美味しい！　でも一口飲んだ途端、私は甘いものが欲しくなりました。　たぶんビールの苦さのせいでしょう。　私は今回のイベントではデザートを用意していなかったのを後悔しました。（９月に開催したジョイント・バーベキュー・イベントでは大型スーパー “コストコ” で買った特大のケーキがあったのですが・・・コストコのケーキは美味しいんですよ！）　これからのイベントでは絶対にデザートを準備したいと思います・・・ビールを試さないときも。(^・^)
私の生徒さんの１人が 「先生、黒ビールがお似合いですね。」 と言ってくれました。(^・^)　また、恵比寿ビールを飲んでいた人から「恵比寿とギネスはどっちが美味しいですか？」と聞かれましたが、私はそのビールを飲んだことがありません！　それにもう何年もビールを飲んだことがなかったのです！　私にその質問は面白かったです。　１パイントもの量のビールは私には多すぎましたが、でも私は帰るまでには全部飲み干すことができました。　これらの写真と文章からお分かりのとおり、私はいつもイベントを大いに楽しんでいます。
その日、私がウーロン茶以外に飲んだのはこの黒ビールだけでした。　本当です！(^・^)

 

People were asked to bring new 1,000 yen presents (”good” presents) wrapped up nicely as well as “bad” presents (like something old) also wrapped up nicely, both to be given. First, numbers were put on all presents. Then a hat containing pieces of paper with the numbers on them was passed around. Everybody drew pieces of paper. Then Al from Smith’s School of English Okamoto called out numbers and handed the gifts to the people who had the numbers (you can see him holding up a present in the photo on the right) People had the choice of either keeping the present they received, or exchanging it for someone else’s present. It was fun! I got a used world globe and some soap. (^.^)

食事のあとはいよいよお楽しみのプレゼント交換です。　その日、私たち参加者はそれぞれ２つずつプレゼントを用紙しました。　１つは千円程度の、いわゆる “グッド・プレゼント” 、もう１つは家にある不用品などを、グッドプレゼントと同じように綺麗にラッピングした “バッド・プレゼント” です。　参加者は持ってきた２つのプレゼントを食事の前に出していたのですが、このプレゼント交換ゲームではリーダーは最初に全部のプレゼントに番号を付けていきました。　次にプレゼントと同じ番号の紙切れを、帽子の中に入れ参加者全員に回して１人１枚ずつその紙を取ってもらいました。
リーダーは岡本校の講師のアルがしてくれたのですが、彼は１つずつ綺麗にラッピングされたプレゼントをみんなに見せながら、プレゼントに付けられた番号を大声で言いました。 みんなは自分の取った番号と同じ番号のプレゼントをそのまま受け取ってもいいし、またそれが気に入らなければ、自分より前に受け取った人のどのプレゼントとでも交換ができるのです。　そして 「交換して」 と言われた人は断ることができないのです。　面白いゲームでしょう！　私たちはこのゲームを２回して、全員２つずつプレゼントを手に入れることができました。　私は“中古”の地球儀と石鹸をゲットしました。(^・^)

Last Sunday a Smith's School of English joint party was held at a nice pub near Nishinomiya Kitaguchi.
It was a cozy place.
About 30 students and teachers gathered there and had a great time talking, eating and exchanging X’mas present goods they had brought there. I felt it was a nice 2 hours and I had a great time.

先週の日曜に、西宮北口の素敵なパブで、スミス英会話学校の合同クリスマスパーティーが開かれました。
そこは、居心地の良い、駅からも近いパブだったんですよ。

Dear Derek,
Thank you for holding the nice 3 schools’ joint Christmas party for us!　Last year, Derek-sensei held his own Tsukaguchi School Christmas party and we had a very good time. You always plan events that make us happy, don’t you Derek?　This time, I was looking forward to joining the party because the last joint barbecue event was excellent. This party was as wonderful as the last one as I had expected. I enjoyed talking with some students about trips to foreign countries and with Al-sensei’s wife about how to study English and so on. That was so much fun!　There were 3 teachers at the party. One of the 3 spoke Canadian English, another one spoke American English and another one spoke British English! Wow! I tried to distinguish the differences of the 3 in what they said, but I couldn’t (oh dear, oh well). However that was very good study for me and fun!
I already look forward to joining such a fun event next time too!

３校合同のクリスマスパーティを開催していただきありがとうございました。　去年は塚口校だけのクリスマスで、私たち生徒はとても楽しいひと時を過ごすことができました。　デレック先生はいつも、どんなことをしたら生徒が喜ぶかを考えてイベントを企画してくださっていますね！　この間あった３校合同のバーベキューイベントがとても楽しかったので、今回のクリスマスイベントも３校合同だと聞き、私は参加するのをとても楽しみにしていました。　思ったとおり本当に楽しかったです！　３校共催だったので当日は３人の先生が来られていました。　お１人は私の先生でカナダ英語を、もうお１人はアメリカ、そしてあとのお１人はイギリス英語を話されます。 　すごい！　私はその英語の違いを聞き取ろうとがんばりましたが・・・できませんでした。(無理　無理　笑)　でもそれはとても良い勉強になりましたし、楽しくもありました。
こんな楽しいイベントに次回も参加できるのを今から楽しみにしています。

Every year, I really look forward to the Smith’s Christmas party. This year’s party started with a fancy invitation email from Derek. It was held at Capall Uisce Irish Pub in Nishinomiya Kitaguchi and joined by the Okamoto, Kawanishi and Tsukaguchi schools. It was the first time to hold a Christmas party with other schools. It was so fun and I had a fantastic time with many people. The restaurant had a really good atmosphere and I felt as if I was staying abroad. I recalled when I had gone to a pub in London the Christmas before. At that time, I had eaten fish and chips while drinking beer, the same way as at this party. After chatting, we exchanged our presents with all of the attendees. Everybody enjoyed the party so the three hours were over very quickly. I can’t wait until the next Smith’s joint event.

私は毎年この時期になるとスミス英会話のクリスマスパーティがとても楽しみです。今年はデレック先生がその内容をおしゃれなメールで、私たち生徒に知らせてくださいました。去年までのクリスマスは塚口校だけで開催されていましたが、今年は岡本校、川西校、塚口校の３校合同で、阪急西宮北口駅からすぐ近くのパブを借り切って行われました。そのパブの雰囲気はとても良く、まるで海外にいるような気分になり、私は去年のクリスマスに行ったロンドンのパブのことを思い出しました。その時も、同じようにビールを飲みながらフィッシュ　アンド　チップスを食べました。とてもなつかしいです。私は他校の生徒さんたちや先生方ともお話できてとてもうれしかったです。食事の後、お楽しみのプレゼント交換が始まりましたが、とても楽しかったので予定されていた３時間はあっという間に過ぎてしまいました。私は今からもう次のスミスの合同イベントがとても楽しみです。
