One of my students and I share “fishing” as a hobby in common. We had been talking about going fishing together for some time. One holiday in November, the weather was perfect for fishing, and we finally carried out our plan to go finishing.

It was my first time fishing in Japan. I had imagined it would be different from Australian way of fishing. The minute we got to the fishing spot, I saw the differences VERYclearly.

A typical fishing trip for me in Australia means standing on a long golden beach with a rod in one hand, and typically, a beer in the other. Catching fish is usually secondary on these type of trips. In Japan, fishing in taken a lot more seriously. I was amazed to see their fishing attire and the a huge amount of equipment used by some of the fisherman.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to provide my wife with any big fish for dinner even though many smaller fish were caught without even trying that hard. We cooked these on the spot as they were reeled in. My student was able to share with me some of his fishing knowledge and even taught me how to tie a few new knots. I was able to spend a great day with my student, exchanging fishing stories, some of which held more truth than others.

I love having these kind of "outside of the classroom" experiences with my students, as I sure they enjoy themselves too!

「釣り」という趣味を共有していた、私と私の生徒さん。以前より「一緒に釣りに行こう」と話して
いました。11月のとある祝日、お天気も良く、やっと釣りを決行することに。

日本では始めての釣りでした。オーストラリアの釣りとは違うものかとは思っていましたが、実際
釣り場に着いた瞬間に、その違いを目の当たりにしました。

オーストラリアで釣りと言えば、どこまでも続く金色のビーチでビール片手にのんびりするもので、
魚が釣れればラッキー。釣れなくてもビーチでの時間を楽しむことが出来たらいい、くらいのもので
す。しかし、日本人の釣りに対する姿勢は、まず服装からして違います。名人が着るようなチョッキ
に、何が入っているのか、皆さん大荷物で防波堤から釣っていました。

残念なことに夕食に妻に持って帰られるような大きな魚は釣れませんでしたが、小さな魚は面白いよ
うに釣れる釣れる。その場で調理し、美味しくいただきました。お互い今までの釣りの話に花を
咲かせたり（多少手柄を大袈裟に言ったところもありますが）、新しくノットの作り方を教えてもら
ったりと、生徒さんと楽しい1日を過ごすことができました。やっぱり生徒さんたちとこうやって
レッスン以外で交流するのは楽しいですね。
