皆さん、きっと中学校で習ったと思いますが、不規則動詞の活用は英会話の中で最も大切な要素の１つです。不規則動詞の習得は英会話には不可欠ですが、それをマスターするのはかなり難しいことです。とにかくいっぱい練習する必要があります。下のオーディオ(音声 )を使って何度も練習してみて下さい。頑張って確実に身につけて下さい。

Do any of you know about new year resolutions? Well these are little promises you make to yourself to do something good in the New Year.

For example you can make a resolution to lose weight or learn to cook some new dishes or learn to speak a new language.

I put a few examples below:

1. I resolve to get more exercise. I will walk at least 20 minutes every day.
2. I resolve to work hard to make my lessons more beneficial for my students.
3. I resolve to try to point out the benefits of the Smith’s School of English to as many potential students as I can.  (Small class size: Maximum 3/ Reasonable Price/ Teachers who really care about students’ progress/ Curriculum developed to help Japanese students/ Flexibility: all students can easily add as many lessons as they want for one fixed lesson price/ Fun joint events held throughout the year to allow students to meet each other and use what they have learned)

私は日本に来て５年経ちますが、英語で話しかけられた経験は生徒さんを除いたら、たった４回しかありません。　今日がその４回目でした。鯛焼きを買おうと思って行った鳴門鯛焼きの店でのことです。そこで働いている男性店員が私に「帰るまでどれ位かかりますか」「スタンプカードはお持ちですか」と英語で話しかけてきました。それからお釣りを渡す時にも「ありがとうございます。どうぞ良い一日を！」と英語で言ってくれました。とても良い気持ちになりました。

その時私は、日本人がもっともっとこのような場面で英語を使ったら、日本は外国人にとって本当に心地良い国になるのではと思いました。まあ、ここは日本ですから日本語を使うべきなのかもしれませんが、英語を勉強する本当の目的はコミュ二ケーシｮンを取ることですので、それをもっと学校で教えてくれたらと思います。そうすれば英語の勉強はもっと楽しくなるのではないでしょうか。

Well, it happened again. Someone spoke to me in English in Japan!

Having been in Japan for five years and taught English, it is still really nice when someone speaks to me in English without any prompting from my side. It is so rare though as it has happened to me only 4 times in 5 years. Today it happened when I stopped to buy a Fish-shaped Japanese treat called Naruto Taiyaki. The young man working there asked me how long it would be for me before I would eat the treat and he asked if I had or needed a stamp card. Then he handed me my change and said “Thank you sir. Have a nice day!”

I have to tell you, for a native English speaker in Japan, it is really nice when someone speaks English.

冠詞と前置詞に関して下のルールと例文を見て下さい。

1.  冠詞のa, an, the は可算名詞のみの前に使用されています。

だから数える物の前に必ず入れなければならないですが、その物の数は２つ以上であれば冠詞を入れなくて良いです。次の文章を見て下さい。冠詞はいっぱい入っています。

–>This is a room. There is a table in the middle of the room. There’re four chairs around the table. There’s a clock on the wall. The clock is above a picture. The picture is a picture of a flower. The flower is colorful.　ここで分かったはずの事は物を最初に紹介する時その名詞の前にa という冠詞が使われます。その同じ物を二回目から話題に出す時冠詞のthe を使わなければならないです。

2.  でもher/his/my/your/its/their/ourといった所有格の代名詞が使われている場合には冠詞を入れてはいけないのです。

次の文章を見て下さい。–>There is a man sitting at the table. He has a pen in his hand. It’s his pen. There’s a book on the table in front of him. It’s his book. The book is closed. His hand is on the book.

注：所有格の代名詞が名詞の前に置かれている時には冠詞を入れてはいかないです。もう一つ注意することは英語の場合人の手や足など（体のどの部分でも）必ずher/his/my/your/its/their/ourといった所有格の代名詞を入れなければならないです。その時冠詞は必要ないです。

3.  冠詞のa と the の使用にあたって状態で選べなくてならないです。

He sat down at a table near the window. （このa と the の使い方で分かる事は窓は一つだけとテーブルは二つ以上あります。彼はその部屋にある一つの窓の近くのいくつかのテーブルの一つに座りました。）これで冠詞は状態の説明に役立つ力があります。

4.  練習イメージを掴めば前置詞は使いこなせるようになります。良く間違えられるのはonとaboveの使い分けとbyとwithの使い分けです。

英語の「on」と「above」はどちらも日本語の「～の上にある」という意味ですが、「on」は「～にくっついている」という意味で、「above」は「～の表面から離れて上にある」という意味です。「by」と「with」の使い分けはもっと難しいですが、慣れればイメージが掴めます。

• With 「~で」「~と」という意味で使われる。伴う、所有する、というニュアンスがある。
• By 「~によって」と手段、方法を伝えるニュアンスがある。 「~で」 「~と」「までに」という意味で使われる。特に気をつけるのは「までに」これは締め切りや限界のある時に使います。それにたいして「until」は 「～まで」という時に用いる。
• A boy with brown hair got on the train.
• He went to the movies with his friend.
• He wrote the letter with a pencil.
• He played the role with passion.
• He went out with her permission.
• I go to work by train.
• I have to be at work by 9:00 a.m. 午前九時までに職場に付かればならないです。（ここでちょっと注意したいのは「by」の代わりに「until」を使うと意味が変わります。「by」は期限や締め切りのある時に用いる。I usually work until 9:00 p.m. 普段私は夜九時まで働いています。）

では頑張って下の問題に、前置詞、冠詞または所有格の代名詞を入れて下さい。全部記入したらアンサーを聞いてチェックして下さい。

Step Three: 普段よく使う形容詞のリストを作成して下さい。私の経験で、皆さんが自分のものにしていないと思う単語:

deep <=> shallow

wide <=> narrow

high <=> low

cheap <=> expensive

interesting <=> boring

dangerous <=> safe

beautiful <=> ugly

educational <=> entertaining

etc, etc.　必ず反対語も覚えること。それから比較級と最上級も覚えること。

Step four: 普段使う前置詞フレーズのリストを作成して下さい。私の経験で、皆さんが自分のものにしていないと思う単語: above the picture, at 6:00, in the winter, in June, in the afternoon, under the table, before the meeting, after lunch, between 1:00 and 2:00, from 1:00 to 2:00, for me, by train, by 7:00 p.m., in ten minutes, next to you, behind you, in front of restaurant, across from the bank etc.

Step five: 普段よく使うフレーズのリストを作成して下さい。私の経験で、皆さんが自分のものにしていないフレーズ: I know., Really?, I did., I didn’t., He told me., Wow!, That’s cool!, I hadn’t heard that., What can I say?, I went yesterday, How can I say…, Absolutely, No way!, You got that right!, What?, Are you sure?,  etc., etc.

Well, I think you get the idea now.

おわかりいただけましたか？このようなリストを作ってから何回も練習してみて下さい。

もちろん、良い本もたくさんありますが、自分で苦労して作ったリストが一番良いと思います。まず日常会話でよく使う単語やフレーズから勉強していって下さい。

It’s best to master these simpler things before you move on to the harder vocabulary for TOEIC, TOEFL or EIKEN (Step Test).  But you should not stop at this point.  You need as much vocabulary or 話す燃料 as you can get.

One of the hardest things to do it to refrain from translating into your native language.  In school you are taught to do this over and over again.  Then when you want to read and understand the new language, or speak it, you have this very bad habit.  To overcome this bad habit you must practice trying to not translate.  You have to do this over and over and over again.  Until you start doing this, you will not be able to really speak or use the target language for a real purpose.  It is hard but it is worth the effort!  Do not give up!
