「英語が上手にならない最大の理由は“日本では英語を使う必要性がない”から」というのをよく耳にします。　確かに普通に生活している限り、その必要性はないのかも知れません。　しかし私は、サービスに携わる仕事、例えばガソリンスタンド、コーヒーショップ、居酒屋etcで働く人たちにはその“必要性”があると思っています。　実は毎日多くの人たちと接する機会があるこの業界の人たちにとって、英語はとても身近なものであるにもかかわらず、そのチャンスを見逃しているのです。　もちろん、この日本ではほとんどの外国人は片言ででも日本語を話しますのでその必要性はないのかもしれませんが。

英語が上手になるには常に英語に触れること、上手に話したいなら、とにかくいっぱい話すことです。　それはたとえ相手がなくても、しようと思えばできます。　“Repeat phrases over and over while thinking of the meaning.”

あなた１人でもできる英語のエクササイズにチャレンジしてみませんか？　次の英語を読んで“英語で理解”し、つまり英語を日本語に置き換えないで、私が書いた英語をそのままの順序で理解しアクションしてみませんか。　１分間でできます。　さあ、やってみましょう！

Do the following in order and check the result against the picture in my next post in アルの部屋. Do not translate. You have one minute only.

1. Put a sheet of A4 paper vertically on the table. Write the starting time in the lower right corner of the paper.
2. Using a pencil draw a circle in the middle of the paper. Make the diameter 10cm.
3. Draw a horizontal line through the center of the circle. Make the line extend 1 cm beyond the right and left sides of the circle.
4. Draw a vertical line through the center of the circle.  Make the line extend 1 cm beyond the top and bottom of the circle.
5. Write the date in the lower left corner of the paper. Underline the date.
6. Write your name in English in the upper right corner of the paper.
7. Write the letters associated with the compass points North, South, East and West at the appropriate ends of each line.  (Put North at the top.)
8. Circle the letter for West.
9. Draw a five pointed star in the upper left corner.
10. Use the pencil to fill in the pentagon in the middle of the star. Write the finishing time in the top center of the paper.
